Official inauguration of academic year 2011/2012 was on 29 September 2011 combined with a ceremony of awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Hans-Dietrich Genscher.

The Poznań University of Economics and Business celebrated its 85th birthday with an honorary doctorate for Hans-Dietrich Genscher.


On 29 September 2011 in the Adam Mickiewicz University Assembly Hall, at 11:00 am, the Poznań University of Economics and Business commenced a new academic year that crowned through this the celebrations of the anniversary year of 85 years of the University.


The inauguration event was preceded by the unveiling in front of the Main University Building of sculptures of two scholars of the Poznań University of Economics and Business, Professors - Edward Taylor and Zbigniew Zakrzewski. Subsequently, upon the sounds of the concert band, the Senate and the invited guests marched to the Adam Mickiewicz University Assembly Hall in order to officially accept Mr Hans-Dietrich Genscher – a politician of the world format, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chancellor of Germany - as a new member of doctors honoris causa of the Poznań University of Economics and Business.


The University Senate appointed this title pursuant to the motions of the following Faculty Councils: Economics, International Economics, Computer Science and Electronic Economics, Commodity Science and Management at the Poznań University of Economics and Business. Hans Dietrich Genscher was distinguished in honour of his outstanding achievements in the field of foreign policy and, in particular, for his extraordinary impact on negotiating the agreement recognizing the border on the Oder and Nysa as a state border between Poland and Germany, accepted by both countries in 1991, in honour of his actions towards international tension release and ending the “cold war”, for his participation in the international negotiations thanks to which a peaceful process of German unity became possible for our neighbour and our most important economic partner as well as for his support for the reforming strengths in Poland at the end of the 80's.

Among the invited guests, the following could not be omitted: Marshal of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, Marek Woźniak and the President of the City of Poznań, Ryszard Grobelny, who bestowed the dignified Jubilarian with special gifts.


The inauguration celebration commenced however already on 28 September with a discussion panel “Poland-Germany How far away and how close” with participation of, among others: Andrzej Byrt, Chairman of the Poznań International Fairs, Michael Kleiss, Chairman of Volkswagen Poznań S.A.


The new academic year 2011/1012 will be commenced by 16 thousand students from all forms of studies.
