Webinar on the latest UN population projection

The Committee on Demographic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Poznań University of Economics and Business (PUEB) organized a webinar on July 12, 2024, devoted to the latest population projection of the United Nations (UN).

Starting from 1989, World Population Day is celebrated on July 11th. It was established by the UN General Assembly on the initiative of the Governing Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The inspiration for its creation was public interest in the Day of Five Billion, which took place on July 11, 1987, when the world’s population reached five billion people.

World Population Day aims to draw attention to issues related to the development of the world’s population, including family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights. On this day, the UN Population Division also announces its biennial population projections (World Population Prospects, WPP). This year’s projection is the twenty-eighth edition published by the UN Population Division. On this occasion, a seminar was held in the form of an open plenary meeting of the Committee on Demographic Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Poznań University of Economics and Business.

The results of the population projection were presented by Prof. John Wilmoth, Director of the United Nations Population Division. Prof. Wilmoth is a retired professor of demography at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked until 2014. Since 2005, he has been associated with the UN Population Division. Prof. Wilmoth is the author or co-author of over 50 scientific papers. From 2009 to 2012, he was a consultant to the World Health Organization and the World Bank. He has also served on several expert panels convened by the United States government or the National Academy of Sciences.

The topic was introduced by Prof. Elżbieta Gołata, Chairwoman of the Committee on Demographic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations at PUEB. The results of World Population Prospects 2024 were presented by Prof. John Wilmoth, Director of the United Nations Population Division. Assumptions regarding migration were presented by Prof. Paweł Kaczmarczyk, director of the Center for Migration Research at the University of Warsaw, and Prof. Agnieszka Fihel from the same university.

Prof. Paweł Strzelecki from the Institute of Statistics and Demography of the Warsaw School of Economics gave a speech titled “WPP24 and the Population Forecast of the Central Statistical Office 2023,” and “Aging Population: Demographic Prospects of Central and Eastern Europe” was presented by Prof. Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak, Vice-Rector for Science and Director of the Institute of Statistics and Demography of the Warsaw School of Economics. The seminar was widely received internationally, which resulted in an interesting discussion, after which the final remarks were presented by Prof. Irena E. Kotowska, Honorary Chairwoman of the Committee on Demographic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
