ORCID - Open Researcher and Contributor ID

ORCID (pronounced ‘orkid’) is an international system for identifying authors of scientific publications. It consists of a unique alphanumeric identifier composed of 16 digits divided into four equal parts.

The designation includes the digits 0-9 and the letter X for the number 10.

The ORCID identifier is recorded in the form of a URL: https://orcid.org/oznaczenie alphanumeric (e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9079-593X).

Anyone who registers at ORCID is assigned a profile in addition to their identifier.

The ORCID profile can include and update information such as:

  • different variations in the spelling of the first and last name,
  • educational background,
  • employment history,
  • e-mail address,
  • research grants awarded,
  • list of publications,
  • other researcher identifiers (e.g. Scopus ID, Researcher ID).

The ORCID system is created and maintained by the non-profit organisation ORCID, Inc. (based in the United States) which was established in 2010 at the initiative of academic researchers, publishers, research institutions, charity foundations and IT institutions.

ORCID identifiers are currently used, in particular, for the registration and submission of scientific articles to publishers (e.g. Wiley, Springer), to identify authors for grant applications, e.g. in the HORIZON 2020 programme, or as a tool to gain an overview of an author’s scientific output.

ORCID identifiers will play a significant role in evaluating Polish scientific entities in 2021. Each person whose achievements make up the evaluated output of a given entity will be required to have this identifier.
