Our student gave a speech at the EP during Europe Day

May 13, 2022

Kacper Parol, a third-year student majoring in international economic relations, spoke at the European Parliament in front of the most important people in the EU. He was the only person from Poland to speak at the Europe Day celebration in front of French President, Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola.

In his speech in Strasbourg, he presented recommendations from the final report on European identity and the youth, where he called, among other things, for further strengthening the role of young people in public life. “We, the young people, want to be heard so that we can fight for our future. And our future is in the European Union. (…) we feel that we do not have adequate representation,” said our student.

Parol also used the occasion to appeal to European leaders to act on the war in Ukraine, which “has the same source as the climate crisis. That source is fossil fuels, the foundation of violence and inequality. Persisted use of coal, oil and gas, which finance the war in Ukraine, should never happen!”

The event, which took place on May 9, was the symbolic culmination of the year-long work of the Conference on the Future of Europe, a joint initiative of the three EU institutions intended as a bold step toward involving citizens in the workings of the European Union.

Kacper Parol is one of the citizens who worked on the recommendations. Since September, he has been active in the group “Stronger Economy, Social Justice and Labor,” where he presented the perspective of the younger generation and its economic position, among others, on the labor or housing market. The group proposes, among other things: harmonization of tax rates in the European Union, standardization of the minimum wage, greater emphasis on investment in housing infrastructure and public transportation. Important changes in the functioning of the EU proposed during the Conference are: the end of the veto rule in the Council of the European Union, the voting age of 16 for European Parliament elections, and citizens’ referendums at the EU level.

We sincerely congratulate!

We educate leaders who build a better social and economic reality.
