In the article “The evolution of contractual and relational governance mechanisms when platforms are actors in networks”, a comparative case study of platforms from Poland and Norway is conducted. It analyzes how platforms as network actors influence network governance mechanisms and how this changes over time. It identifies how crucial contextual factors influence the dynamic combination of formal, informal, and virtual network governance mechanisms. Contextual factors include factors at the macro level (e.g. market structure), network level (e.g. scope of the platform), and level of inter-organizational relationships (e.g. previous history of cooperation). It is shown that there is no single optimal set of network governance mechanisms, indicating solutions that are useful depending on the context.
