GPT-5 revolutionizes marketing – what competencies will be the key?

A few weeks ago, the marketing world was shaken by the release of ChatGPT-5. This latest version of artificial intelligence doesn’t just generate better texts – it completely changes how we think about a marketer’s work. But what does this mean for you as a future marketing specialist?

Our Research-Based Framework

As part of the NAWA-Digit project, we have developed a comprehensive framework of competencies needed in AI-driven marketing (full version to find here: https://osf.io/6szw7).  Through systematic research and analysis of current market trends, we’ve identified the skills that will be crucial for marketing professionals in the age of artificial intelligence. From this extensive framework, we’ve selected six core competencies that will be particularly valuable when leveraging GPT-5’s new features.

1. Better Context Understanding

GPT-5 can analyze long briefs and complex marketing strategies, ensuring consistency across omnichannel campaigns – from newsletters to social media.

Required Competency: Data Collection for AI – you must know how to provide AI with the right information to get valuable results.

2. Advanced Reasoning

It’s no longer just about generating ideas. GPT-5 analyzes campaign results (CTR, conversions, A/B tests) and suggests optimizations. Marketing becomes truly data-driven.

Required Competency: AI-based Market Analysis and Forecasting – the ability to think critically about data and results provided by artificial intelligence.

3. Multimodality (Text + Visuals)

The new version can both analyze and create visual assets. A marketer can prepare a complete creative campaign – copy + graphics – all in one place.

Required Competency: Content Generation with AI – creative thinking when working with tools that can generate different content formats.

4. Greater Adaptability

GPT-5 naturally adjusts to a brand’s tone of voice and maintains consistency across all content. Real support in creating on-brand materials.

Required Competency: AI-based Communication – the ability to optimize and automate communication while maintaining brand consistency.

5. Real-time Awareness

With access to current trends, GPT-5 can highlight what’s happening in SEO, TikTok, or Google Ads right now – and how to leverage it in campaigns. Marketing becomes more trend-driven.

Required Competency: Customer Understanding with AI – using artificial intelligence to track behaviors and expectations of audiences in real-time.

6. Safer Outputs

The new version better recognizes potential risks in communication, including both cultural and legal aspects. This is especially crucial in regulated industries, such as finance or pharma.

Required Competency: Digital Safety and Security in the Context of AI – critical assessment of AI’s impact on marketing and protection against negative consequences.

Why This Matters for Your Career

Research shows that organizations are increasingly adopting AI in marketing functions. However, the perspective of marketers themselves often remains marginalized in these considerations. Meanwhile, your future career depends on the ability to collaborate with AI.
