Department of Organisation and Management Theory

Professor Szymon Cyfert, PhD, heads the ten-member team of the Department of Organisation and Management Theory. Although the name of the Department sets the activity of the team in the theory of organisation and management, bearing in mind the essence and nature of management science, the mission of the Department is defined as: “Striving to create added value in the areas of research, teaching and consultancy, we are a ‘transmission belt’ integrating theory and practice of management.”

About the Department

In the mission, based on the assumption that good theory cannot exist without practice, and good practice cannot exist without theory, the focus is on the existence of solid links between management theory and practice, with the assumption that the primary element in this bipolar system (although not the most important) is management theory. Therefore, in the research and teaching and consulting activities conducted at the Department, attempts are made to exploit and explore the following sub-disciplines that constitute the core of management science: methodology of management science, organisation and management theory, managerial decision support, innovation management, organisational behaviour, process and project management strategic management, and human resources management. Pursuing the mission, the Department employees actively participate in shaping management sciences by holding positions in the structures of the Poznań University of Economics and Business (the Senate, the Academic Advancement Board, the Library Council, the Editorial Committee) and the bodies of entities elected by the scientific community (the Council of Scientific Excellence, the Committee of Organisation and Management Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the Commission of Organisation and Management Sciences O/PAN, the Scientific Society of Organisation and Management, the Leszno Society of Friends of Science). The Department staff are also members of numerous scientific committees of national and international scientific conferences and act as editors and reviewers in many journals. The Department staff can effectively inspire students with their passion for the management sciences, which is reflected in awards for students, for the promotion papers they prepare, and in exemplary and outstanding evaluations for staff teaching at all levels of study, from undergraduate to doctoral school. The utilitarian nature of the research work carried out at the Department is reflected in the intensive cooperation with business practice – participation in the supervisory boards of business entities and research and consultancy projects for all types of organisations.
