Title: Analysis of Historical Currency Pegs Since 1800: Implications for the Survivability of Stablecoin
Abstract: This paper examines the historical context of currency pegs from 1800 to 2023 to draw lessons for modern stablecoins. Based on the analysis of 350 pegs, we introduce the Stablecoin Survivability Assessment Framework (SSAF), which integrates a comprehensive set of factors to provide a holistic approach for evaluating the stability and resilience of modern stablecoins, advancing the theoretical frontiers of digital finance. Our analysis shows that effective governance, substantial economic backing, and transparent reserve management have been crucial for maintaining stability in both historical pegs and modern stablecoins. Applying these insights, we conclude that dominant stablecoins like Tether remain vulnerable to de-pegging.
